An Elizabethan mansion completed in 1583 and surrounded by a forest on the one side and parkland that stretches to the New Forest on the other, Breamore is a fascinating place to visit. The museum showcases staged sets depicting traditional village life; after that we shall enjoy a guided tour of the house. This tour covers all aspects of life in the major house from state rooms, intimate living quarters, social spaces and functional rooms. We journey to Breamore by coach, leaving at 10.00 am and returning to base by around 4.30 pm.

This great English country house 'with the warmth of a family home' has one of the most significant private art collections in the country. We will be guided around the house before enjoying Afternoon Tea in the Ballroom. We are invited to arrive at 1.15 pm for the tour and the tea will follow after an hour or so.

This is a beautiful three and a half acre garden, set around an 1832 Regency house. The front is formally laid out with topiary, lawn, mixed border and water sculpture, while the rear features new and mature trees, herbaceous borders, a water garden and stunning views of the North Downs. The Japanese garden, with waterfall and pond, leads to a large copse, stream, treehouse and stumpers. We will enjoy tea and cake. Arrive (own vehicle) at 2.00 pm

After the success of a visit to Philip Jackson's studio and garden in Cocking, West Sussex, last year, we are invited to enjoy lunch in the local pub (The Blue Bell) when he will talk about his work, followed by a wander around his lovely garden, featuring his sculptures.  We will arrive at the pub at 11.30 am.

A visit to Champs Hill to view the Summer Exhibition : Painting the Green, featuring major new acquisitions of works by Winifred Nicholson, Ivon Hitchens, Elizabeth Blackadder and more. We arrive by 2.00 pm (own transport) and will be  greeted with coffee/tea. Weather premitting, we are invited to tour the interesting garden as well.

Jane Austen lived in the cottage in Chawton with her mother and sister Casandra, just etn minutes' walk from the home of her younger brother, Edward. This is the 'Great House' referred to in Jane's letters, now  restored anad housing a uniique collection of women's writing. The  house sits in beautiful landscape and the gardens are tranquil. We will spend some time in both properties, enjoy refreshments at Chawton House and experience a Curator's tour. About one hour journey time. We leave Westergate at 9.30 am and arrive at Chawton at 10.30 am. We shall be delivered home by 4.30 pm.

In 1916, the painter Vanessa Bell and her friend and lover Duncan Grant moved to Charleston, a farmhouse in the South Downs east of Lewes, East Sussex, along with Duncan’s partner David Garnett. It was the height of the First World War and, as conscientious objectors, Garnett and Grant needed to find farm work to avoid conscription.

Almost as soon as they moved in, Bell and Grant began to paint every surface in the farmhouse, transforming it into a living, breathing work of art. Over the following decades, Charleston became a gathering point for some of the 20th century’s most radical artists, writers and thinkers known collectively as the Bloomsbury group. It is where they lived out their progressive social and artistic ideals. Today, it continues to be a place that brings people together to engage with art and ideas.

The garden, filled with fruit trees and vegetables when they arrived, was redesigned in 1918 by the art critic Roger Fry, a close friend, who created the rectangular lawn, gravel paths and flowerbeds, which Bell and Grant filled with the flowers they loved to paint.

The garden often doubled as an auditorium, where Bell’s children and their friends would improvise plays, as well as being an outdoor exhibition space where Vanessa’s son Quentin installed many of his sculptures. Opened to the public in 1986, the garden has always been a place for excitement and discovery as well as quiet contemplation.

A coach will leave Westergate at 9.30 am on Thursday 5th October and we plan to return (traffic permitting) by 4.30 pm . The fee for the visit is £41 per person

Fellow member of the Society, John Barkshire, is guiding us around this familiar, and fascinating town with a talk in the museum follwed by a guided walk.  

There will be tea and coffee at the museum and the talk will start at 11.00 am with a tour of the museum followed by lunch between 12 noon and 2.00 pm. We are requested to make our own lunch arrangements - not too hard a task in Arundel. 

The tour of the town starts at 2.00 pm and will include St Nicholas Church. Estimated end time is 3.30 pm.

Set in a lovely area of the SDNP, the vineyard is a joy to explore and our tour will include the winery as well as the vines and includes a wine tasting.

Constructed in about 1470 by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester and founder of Magdalen College, Oxford, the house was an inn for pilgrims en route to the tomb of St Thomas of Cantebury.  The house has a fascinating history and is now owned by author and composer, Peter Thorogood, in collaboration with designer and landscape gardener Roger Linton.  The garden has undergone considerable work over the last few years and is at its best in June. Refreshments will be served on arrival at 10.30 am.  A tour of the house and garden will fill the day and we are welcome to picnic in the garden. We journey to St Mary's House by car; sharing where possible. The full address is St Mary's House and Garden, Bramber, The Street, Steyning, BN44 3WU. According to Google, the journey from Boxgrove will take about 35 miinutes.

Matt Black Barn is a newly-constructed working artist studio complex of the artists Laura Ford and Andrew Sabin.  The site is unique in that it offers 14,000 square feet of new studio space in which all the current work and processes employed are on show.  It includes storage and handling facilities for large-scale sculptures and installations.  

The grounds are spectacular, offering sites for works integrated into a landscape of lakes, ancient woodland and meadows.

During the visit we will be able to walk around the studios and meet the artists. 

The visit will begin with coffee/tea and biscuits, followed by a tour of the worshops and grounds.  

Matt Black Barn is situated in Hambrook, near Chichester.  Members will make their own way there and should arrive by 10.30.  Cost will be £5 to cover the coffee/tea and biscuits.

The Sculpture Park is situated just outside Salisbury.  We will have a guided tour of the current exhibition whch is the work of Edward Allingham, a British sculptor best known for his part in the 80s New British Sculpture Movement.  Our tour will be followed by tea and time to walk around the 20 acres of landscaped park to see more than 200 works by contemporary sculptors.

This is becoming our annual visit.  The theme this year is The Seasons, The City and The Sea - 19th Century Dutch Romantic Painting.  There will be no introductory lecture but information sheets will be available.  Refreshments will not be available unless Covid regulations allow.  The visit will start at 10 am and members will have time to visit the garden and view the sculptures before the garden closes at 12.

When Stourhead was first opened to the public in 1740 a magazine described it as 'a living work of art'. The Palladian style house is set in magnificent landscaped gardens with classical temples, mystical grottoes and rare and exotic trees.

Highclere is best known as television's Downton Abbey but in reality it is the home of Lord and Lady Carnarvon. As well as the castle we will visit the Tutankhamum exhibition and the extensive grounds. In the afternoon we will visit Sandham memorial chapel to see Stanley Spencer's visionary paintings.

Following an organised visit to the Marianne North gallery, there will be time to explore the 130 hectares of landscapes and gardens. Highlights include the Hive, the Princess of Wales conservatory, the Palm house and the treetop walk.

A lavish family home built to resemble an Italian palace in the Dorset countryside.There is plenty to see in the house from beautiful carvings and paintings by the old masters to intimate family souvenirs and strange curiosities such as an 'I owe you ' note from a King. In the 8.500 acre estate there are Iron Age forts, water meadows, a farm and a Japanese garden complete with tea house.
