HERITAGE VOLUNTEERS AT

LIFE OF AN ARUNDEL MUSEUM HERITAGE VOLUNTEER By Tom Little

Having recently moved to the area,I was keen to join The Arts Society and to become more involved so I jumped at the chance when vacancies for Heritage Volunteers occurred at Arundel Museum.

Since I had previous experience of dealing with customers and press and publicity, I was invited to become a member of the Arundel Museum marketing team with a special role of writing reviews for the press on the Arundel Museum Talks Programme.

In addition, I was happy to be part of the front of house team dealing with customers and visitors to the Museum Shop, the Museum itself, as well as the Tourist Information enquiry  point. This usually involves attending one afternoon per week but hours are flexible. For the first time in my life I had to learn how to operate an electronic/digital till, which proved a lot easier than I'd expected.

Indeed, thanks to NADFAS/TAS I welcomed the opportunity to get settled into  new area and to  meet both locals and  visitors alike. It has greatly broadened my knowledge of the area and its history and characters, which I have drawn upon in dealing with the public. I can whole heartedly recommend Heritage Volunteering both in terms of benefit to the museum and on a personal level.
